Happy Autumn/Fall season! I have the pleasure of posting this for you all at the beginning of my FAVORITE season, and boy did I make something that fit the autumnal vibe.
I have been WAITING to make a Hinterland Dress for forever and I’m SO excited I had the chance to make it in collaboration with Indiesew. You can get the Hinterland Dress by Sew Liberated HERE. This rust beauty is made up of a combination of awesome things so we’re going to be talking about fabric and construction. Let’s get into the details!
THE FABRIC
This fabric is the ever amazing Avery Slub Linen blend from La Mercerie (SOLD OUT) , it’s a mixture of linen and viscose that creates the softest feel and is also amazingly breathable. The fabric has a medium weight and a very lovely drape, it also doesnt need a lining which is a major plus.
Let’s talk about that bias binding! Soft and luscious and a perfect pairing to the Avery Slub is this Bemberg Jacquard from Indiesew. The soft smooth texture feels like a treat to even have brush against my neck and collarbone.
PATTERN HACK AND CONSTRUCTION
I made my Hinterland with a full button placket and used the back elastic hack on Megs blog (found HERE) and I don’t think I’ll ever put ties on a Hinterland because of how easy the hack was. Basically the back has an elastic casing that clinches the waist for you instead of having ties. Because of this, I’m able to wear this Hinterland in a variety of ways, either casual or dressy, throwing it on or wearing it as a vest with some pants without tying anything.
I DID run into a snag! I have some amazing mother of pearl buttons gifted to me from Sarah Kirsten and didn’t have enough for the dress, so I ordered more, or so I thought. I actually got the extras in the wrong size! Turns out my size was sold out. How did I improvise after already sewing the buttons on the dress? Well you could say it was a “snap” (hehe sewing puns). I used 3 snaps at the bottom of the dress to hold the placket in place. They go unnoticed and look pretty natural for the dress. So it all worked out and I didn’t have to take out all of my beautiful buttons.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
I can completely see why people have raved over this dress. It’s such a gem. Easy to sew, simple to wear, and the layering possibilities are endless. I haven’t stopped wearing it and I actually plan on taking it with me on our anniversary trip in a few weeks. I can definitely see myself making a few more of these and I love how easy it transitions from being either dressy or casual. And it has pockets, need I say more? The Hinterland Dress is a fully equipped pattern and is perfect for beginner to intermediate sewists. With multiple views and hacking capabilities this dress can be a base for whatever you envision it to be. Make sure to check out the pattern so you can make your own and follow #hinterlanddress on Instagram for more inspiration!
This project was made in collaboration with Indiesew. The pattern was provided by Indiesew but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

You did such a great job on this dress and I love the improvisation with the buttons. I will definitely consider that if I ever run into the same issue in the future.

Thanks Christine! Snaps are definitely a lifesaver I’m learning!

That is such a clever idea! I have a dress in my closet with a full button placket that is kind of short and the gaping at the bottom keeps it from being worn regularly. Adding snaps would be a great solution! Thanks for sharing!

Hi! Your dress turned out beautifully! I just finished my second Hinterland, kind of wish I’d done the elastic back hack. Planning the V-neck hack next. Gorgeous color on you!
